Carer Support Service
Carer Support Service
No one should go through dementia alone
Jacky Phelan and Lesley Parkes are our Carer Support Workers. Their job is to ensure that any carers who make contact with us have access to all of the information and advice they need and are fully aware of the services BIADS is able to offer them.
The journey of caring for a loved one or family member with dementia can be rewarding, challenging, sometimes isolating, and much more, and quite often there is little help or support for the carer. Carer support is exactly that.
We are able to offer advice and information, make referrals to other agencies, and provide the all important emotional support. When you contact BIADS we hope you will allow us to either visit you in your own home or arrange to meet you at our dementia support centre so that we can start our relationship and get to know all about you and your loved one with dementia. We will then be with you throughout your journey as much or as little as you wish, whatever you need to help support you so you can live well with dementia.
It may be that you are happy to just receive our newsletter and have telephone contact with your carer support worker at this time and this is okay; whatever you need. However, we hope that you will embrace some of the services and activities we provide to make living with dementia easier. Come to our monthly cafes and get together’s, take up circle dancing, Jabadao or join us on our holidays, you decide what is best for you and we will always be here when you need us.
When you first contact us you will be referred to Jacky or Lesley and they will be able to tell you about BIADS’ services and how to access them. They will talk to you about benefits, your diagnosis and any challenges you are facing and they will signpost you to outside agencies where needed. Carer support is down to earth and comes from years of experience in dementia care, we are friendly, non-judgemental and supportive.

Referral / Criteria
Referrals can come straight from carers or from GP’s, social workers, memory services or a concerned relative. We need to know that the carer has agreed to our contact and is expecting our call. If you have been referred to Barnsley Memory Assessment Services then we are happy to talk to you even if you are still waiting for a diagnosis.
