Barnsley Independent Alzheimer’s and Dementia Support (BIADS) is still available to offer support to Barnsley people affected by any form of dementia.  Our dementia support and day care centres are closed because of the lockdown measures but we have adapted the support we have on offer.

Our carer support service which offers information, advice, referrals and emotional support is now completely phone based.  Our staff continue to make regular calls to our members and they can ring us on our main number 01226 280057, which is available 24/7 during the lockdown period, and ask for help.  Carer support groups are being held virtually.

As most of our activities are group based we are having to adapt them where we can to use skype and what’s app – not always easy to set up but worth well it when we can see our members and they can see each other as they are not just our members they are our friends and part of the BIADS ‘family’.

Our day care centre is closed for now but will reopen for business as soon as it is safe to do so – we know how much people are missing this service and we want to assure them we will be back in business as soon as possible.

In response to the lockdown we have set up a volunteer befriending service which entails volunteers being matched with members by phone to give people more opportunities to chat.  These calls are in addition to calls made by staff.  This has been so well received we hope to continue the service post lockdown and expand into making home visits if possible.

We continue to explore new ways of keeping in touch with our members such as group texts and emails alongside updates on our website and facebook page.

Our key message to Barnsley people who are affected by dementia is we are definitely still here for you and if you are caring for someone who has dementia and you haven’t joined us yet – don’t wait until lockdown is over – ring us now on 01226 280057
